fdisk: partition table "not in disk order" but "Order is correct already"? and GRUB-legacy issues

For a few days i'm breaking my head over the following:the partition table is reported to be messed up, but it's not.grub-legacy gives problems with some partitions during actual boot-up, but not when invoked in a shell when linux is up-and-running.I suspect the two symptoms are related, but i'm not sure.Background information:Grub-legacy has been booting from an XFS on /dev/sda4 a.k.a. How does the Grub menu actually Works?

After installing Ubuntu alongside Windows (Dual - boot) , I found that , no matter which partition I set as active (bootable) , Grub Menu automatically comes & I can boot to any O/s.I marked C, D & E drives bootable one by one and it works to be fine in every case , while earlier in case of Windows(only Windows installed) , I got a "No os found" or "Boot Mgr is missing" , error message , on doing similar stuff.How Grub is independent of , whether a partition is set active or not ?...Read more

How to change kernel path in grub.conf?

In the /boot/grub/grub.conf file, how would I change the path name of where the kernel boots from if the boot file is located somewhere outside of /boot?For example, I would want to load the boot kernel from /home/root/kernelHow would I specify that? GRUB error 17 booting USB disk

I have a USB disk with Grub 1 installed. I have 6 different Linux versions, all on different partitions, and one boot partition to hold the kernel images and grub.On some systems this works great, I get the boot menu and I can pick the linux distro. But on 2 systems I keep getting error 17 (and nothing else onscreen).I've confirmed the partition table ordering is correct, the partition table is valid, no errors on boot partition, etc. I've also reinstalled GRUB onto the MBR several times.Can someone explain why this is happening, and what I ...Read more
